IRAQ: BORDER VILLAGES ATTACKED, KURDISH GOVERNMENT SAYS

Baghdad, 12 June (AKI) – Villages in Iraqi Kurdistan closer to the Turkish border have undergone 90 artillery bombardments by the Turkish military in recent days, a Kurdistan regional government official, quoted by pan-Arab newspaper al-Hayat has alleged. The Peshmerga militias are holding a series of meetings to formulate a joint response to the artillery attacks, he said. Ankara has denied any incursions by its soldiers in Iraq but says it needs to carry out military operations along the Iraqi border to destroy bases of the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) believed to be responsible for recent bomb attacks in Turkey.”The Iraqi and multinational forces must repond to the Turkish threats said the Peshemerga spokesman Jabbar Yaur. “Our militias have the responsibility of guaranteeing the internal security of the Kurdish region but not of defending it from an external attack.” “They [the Iraqi and coalition forces] are the ones who must defend us from this threat which undermines peace in the region” he added.According to local sources, the inhabitants of the villages along the border are leaving their homes for fear of other attacks. The parties of the Kurdish alliance have asked the Baghdad government to press the UN, the EU and the Arab League to force Turkey to stop the attacks.Meanwhile Iran has called on residents near its frontier with Turkey to leave their homes to avoid possible attacks by the Turkish army.
